The Aruba Thing

I sympathize with the parents who's daughter was obviously killed in Aruba. The events and hounding by Americans and the media of Aruba however is sad. First off, you leave this country then you leave this country's laws and safety. Granted, many of the countries you may visit are probably safer than it is here, but either way you aren't HERE anymore, you are in someone else's country/nation. You get robbed or murdered away from home, then it's the local law enforement and laws that apply. We don't rush our police over to handle it. The Aruban government showed a courtesy by allowing the FBI in as advisors. How arrogant that her parents and others have written letters to Rice, etc. and demand that the Aruban government allow our police to essentially take over the investigation. Maybe we should just bomb the hell out of them then send in the Marines and take over their country? Would this make you feel better? Guess what, a lot more time, effort, and money, has been put into her investigation by Aruban police and people than would have happened had she disappeared in Miami. Had she disappeared in Miami you might have made the 3rd or 4th page of the local paper.

Afghanastan we had reason to do what we did. Iraq we should have waited until Saddam actually DID do something to someone outside his country. Now we are in a position in Iraq we are going to have a hard time extricating ourselves from. We have enough crime, poverty, and other problems at home - we need to fix ourselves and stop imposing ourselves on other countries. We are most likely in the world's eyes looking less like a role model and more like a bully every day. We have enjoyed a dominance only challenged by the Soviet Union since WWI, but China is looming on the horizon to take that over in another few decades. Wonder how we'll take it when we're not top dog anymore and someone else starts telling us what to do.
