Asian Festival

They’re having the annual Asian Festival here in the International District this weekend. I think it is more appropriately the Asian Fair since it was pretty much like every fair Tracy, the cherubs, and I went too, except this time there was no parking involved, I just walked two blocks east. There were some differences, like the monks from Tibet were there, red robs and shaved head. They offered to have me come in and do an incense offering and prayer to Buddha. I declined; I didn’t want to take the chance of getting inside and being mistaken for the guy and causing a mob scene.

They had plenty of food vendors, which was to be expected. What I didn’t expect was such food vendors as the catfish and hushpuppy vendor and the Mexican vendor. A Mexican vendor sandwiched between the Thai and Hawaiian guys. HELLO? Now if I was Asian and it was MY festival, I’d be a bit offended by this. To make matters worse, the Thai guy was twiddling his thumbs while there were a dozen Asians lined up for burritos next door. I don’t get this. Even I had enough respect to skip the catfish and hushpuppies guy and got that delicacy from Hong Kong called a funnel cake a few tents down.

I watched the Karaoke contest. The final 6 had 4 Asians, a white girl that thought she was Brittany Spears, and a white guy who thought he was a thin Garth Brooks. Brittany, who was from British Columbia won. A Canadian travels to another white country to sing in a Karaoke contest at an Asian festival, and wins. Ah-huh. The only one who I saw that actually sang in something besides English (Chinese) made the final 6 but not the top 3. At least it was sponsored by Toyota.
